The Old POTA Man

Welcome to my world of amateur radio, POTA and nature photography!

ABOUT MYSELF
I was born in 1963 in Sarpsborg, Norway. While studying Electrical Engineering at the University in Trondheim (M.Sc.E.E), I took my amateur radio license in 1985, and worked a few years from the University club station LA1K. I have very good memories from this time, when we worked HF and VHF, with no computers and old Kenwood and Yaesu transceivers. Using home brew amplifiers for HF and VHF, we worked a lot of special modes (especially on the 2m band), like MS, EME, Tropo, Aurora and Sporadic E.

The I went QRT for almost 40 years, except for a short period of being QRV in the year 2000. As of january 2025, I am QRV again!

THE HOBBY
The amateur radio hobby has changed a lot, since I took license in 1985. Now, we have computers for logging and dx spotting, which is a huge convenience. The rigs nowadays have waterfall and very good filters, which is another huge advantage. On the less positive side, there is more QRM now, and the propagation is nowhere near what it was in the eighties. And, unfortunately, the recruitment of new ham's is slow. I hope that new programs like POTA and other special activities will help recruiting more young ham's to this amazing hobby.

During my QRT period, I enjoyed a lot being a nature photographer, and I still enjoy that hobby very much. POTA is a great way of combining those two hobbies. Please visit my youtube channel, which contains a lot of nature photography, but also ever more POTA activities and ham radio in general. I really enjoy experimenting with antennas, and there are many projects in the pipeline. Stay tuned!
